Pediatric Chiropractic: Growth vs. Protection Mode

Why your child's nervous system might be working against their own development — and what you can do about it.

There's a quote from Dr. Bruce Lipton, a cell biologist and author of The Biology of Belief, that has stuck with me since the day I first heard it:

"You cannot be in growth and protection at the same time."

It sounds simple. But once you understand what it means at the cellular level, it changes the way you think about your child's health, development, and even their behavior.

Two Modes, One Body

Every cell in the human body operates in one of two basic modes: growth or protection.

  • In growth mode, the body is building. It's repairing tissue, digesting food, absorbing nutrients, developing the brain and nervous system, and laying down the physical foundations a child needs to thrive.

  • In protection mode, the body shifts its resources toward defense. Blood flow moves toward the muscles needed to fight or flee, digestion slows down, immune function changes, and non-essential systems… including growth and development — take a back seat.

This isn't a flaw in the design. It's actually a brilliant survival mechanism. When there's a genuine threat, the body should prioritize protection over growth. The problem is that this switch can get stuck in the "on" position, even when there's no real danger present… and a body that stays in protection mode for too long can't fully do the work of growing.

What Does "Protection Mode" Look Like in a Child?

Protection mode isn't always dramatic. In kids, it can show up as:

  • A nervous system under chronic stress or tension

  • Poor sleep or difficulty settling down

  • Digestive issues

  • Frequent illness

  • Irritability, big emotional reactions, or trouble regulating

  • Physical restrictions or imbalances in the spine and nervous system that keep the body on alert

None of these mean something is "wrong" with your child. They're often signs that the nervous system is doing its job, defending, when what the body actually needs is space to grow.

Why This Matters for Chiropractic Care

The nervous system is the master control system of the body. It's the line of communication between the brain and every organ, tissue, and cell. When that communication is clear, the body has an easier time knowing when it's actually safe to shift out of protection and into growth.

Pediatric chiropractic care is centered on supporting that communication, helping a child's nervous system function the way it's designed to, so their body has the best possible chance to do what it naturally wants to do: grow, adapt, and develop.

This isn't about treating a specific symptom. It's about giving the body less reason to stay on the defensive, so it can spend its energy building instead of bracing.

The Takeaway for Parents

Growth isn't just about height and weight charts. It's happening constantly… in the brain, the gut, the immune system, and the nervous system — every single day of your child's life.

If a child's body is spending too much of its energy in protection mode, that's energy that isn't going toward the growth and development they need most in these early, critical years.

Our goal is simple: to help take the foot off the brake with a specific chiropractic adjustment, so growth can happen the way it's meant to.
